Enrich your visit to Gairloch Gardens with A Large Slow River, one of the most loved pieces in the permanent collection of Oakville Galleries by Canadian artist, Janet Cardiff.  Commissioned in 1999, A Large Slow River is a site-specific audio walk where visitors follow audio cues by a fictional narrator while experiencing the physical environment of Gairloch Gardens.

 

Fridays, June 19 – September 18, 2026

Drop-in between: 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Audio walk duration: 18minutes

Capacity: First come, first served (⁠13 MP3s available)

 

After the walk, visitors are welcome to linger in the gardens, enjoy the summer weather, purchase light refreshments from local vendors as part of  Art of Refreshment, and visit our current exhibition.⁠

MP3's provided. Headphones and audio equipment are available to borrow from the front desk. Visitors are also welcome to use their own headphones, with Bluetooth compatibility available.

Janet Cardiff


Born in 1957 in Brussels, Ontario, Canada lives and works in Berlin, Germany, and Grindrod, British Columbia, Canada Janet Cardiff is internationally recognized for her immersive multimedia works. Her installations, often created in collaboration with her partner, George Bures Miller (born 1960), layer audio tracks to create engaging and transcendent multisensory experiences that draw the viewer into ambiguous and unsettling narratives. Their works typically address themes such as time, voyeurism, dreams, and mystery. Bures Miller and Cardiff represented Canada at the 2001 Venice Biennale.
