Wall to Wall Warhol: from the collection of Salah J. Bachir features over 50 works, exhibited floor-to-ceiling in Salon-style, by pop artist and icon Andy Warhol. Featured works are from the collection of philanthropist and Toronto art collector Mr. Salah J. Bachir. It is the first public glimpse of selections from this special collection and will be on view to the general public from Friday 23 June to Sunday 27 August 2006 at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens.
The exhibition includes canvases, silkscreens and photographs as well as well-known iconic works from the 1960s and ‘70s, such as Jacqueline Kennedy III (1966), Mao (1973) and Grace Kelly (1984). Also included are works from the Endangered Species, Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century, Ladies and Gentlemen and key works from the Death and Disaster series. In these works Warhol brings to the forefront very basic human themes – the beauty of youth and fame, consumer culture, the passing of time, and the presence of death. With his repetitive imagery and mass-production techniques, the artist successfully unmasks the foibles and fixations of a consumer-based culture. These works offer insight into the fascinating complexities beneath Andy’s silver wig.
