Building on a strong base of existing activities and community relationships, Oakville Galleries's school programmes challenge the traditional paradigms of museum education and invite students to come together in a dialogue about contemporary culture. Our staff is guided by a vision that creative work is a vehicle for knowledge, understanding and a stimulus for lifelong learning. Through the school programmes, students are provided with a learning experience in which they can develop important lifeskills: the ability to work with others, to think critically and to communicate effectively.
Through the programmes delivered, we are making an ongoing effort to assess how aesthetic issues and ideas contained in each exhibition at the Galleries can relate to the needs and interests of youth audiences. Understanding these needs and interests is a priority that is fulfilled through an ongoing consultation with students, teachers and school board consultants, as well as through comprehensive research on the curricula. The variety of themes and media exhibited at Oakville Galleries offer a contextual opportunity to explore Canadian contemporary culture, thus responding to art curricula as well as others such as social sciences and environmental studies.

All school programmes are offered in French and English. The collaboration between Oakville Galleries and English, French and French Immersion schools is continually growing, creating more opportunities for students. High standards are set for student activities at Oakville Galleries. To continue achieving this level of excellence, we depend on the support of principals and teachers to help Oakville Galleries lead the way in presenting school programmes that are provocative, engaging and challenging for students.
