Oakville Galleries is committed to developing and maintaining a permanent collection that not only serves as a legacy for the Oakville community but encourages the public to regard art as an integral part of their lives. Over the last 10 years, a compilation of contemporary art has evolved that is quickly gaining international recognition. Currently, the total permanent collection contains more than 1,100 works of art, valued at over $1.7 million.
Through purchases and donations, Oakville Galleries continually seeks to enhance its strengths and to expand the representation of artistic trends in the collection, in response to new developments in art locally, nationally and internationally. Acquisition of works of art from selected Oakville Galleries exhibitions also plays an important role in the development of the permanent collection. Through ongoing fundraising efforts, volunteer support and the generous contributions of the Corporation of the Town of Oakville, the Canada Council Art Acquisition Program and the Edna Powers Memorial Fund, Oakville Galleries maintains an active acquisitions programme. The vision is further reinforced by gifts from generous donors.
The permanent collection features contemporary works of art from national and international artists working in all media. Every year, from April to November, visitors can experience internationally acclaimed artist Janet Cardiff's audio walk A Large Slow River at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens. Other collection highlights include works by award-winning Canadian artists Kim Adams, Gathie Falk and Liz Magor. A strong holding of pieces by notable artists working in Ontario includes Stephen Andrews, Murray Favro, Fastwürms, Robert Fones, Micah Lexier, David Rokeby and Colette Whiten. International artists represented in the collection include Bethan Huws (Wales and France), Patrick Faigenbaum (France), David Mabb (England) and Tatsuo Miyajima (Japan). Photography is a significant focus for the collection, which now holds important works by Roy Arden, Robin Collyer, Rodney Graham, Angela Grauerholz and Glenn Rudolph.
Oakville Galleries is committed to providing public access to its collection through a growing variety of approaches. Major institutions across Canada borrow work from it for exhibitions, and new research and exhibition initiatives from emerging curators are encouraged through an ongoing mentoring programme. Today the permanent collection has grown to a size that allows us to create annual exhibitions from it.
