Oakville Galleries is a not-for-profit charitable public art gallery governed by an autonomous Board of Directors. Oakville Galleries is committed to presenting an innovative programme of exhibitions and providing services relevant to its communities, principally the Town of Oakville. Oakville Galleries' aim is to increase the awareness, appreciation and accessibility of the visual arts through both its programming activities and through maintaining a strong visible presence in the community.
Oakville Galleries's primary commitment is to contemporary Canadian art. Understood as art of the moment, contemporary art addresses issues that relate to our time. This commitment is reflected in all aspects of its programming: exhibitions, permanent collection and acquisition, educational programming and interpretive activities. Oakville Galleries' broader mandate includes the presentation and acquisition of contemporary and historical work in various fine art media by local, national and international artists.
Opportunities for collaboration with other institutions and organizations are actively sought to augment a program of exhibitions and projects initiated or sponsored by Oakville Galleries.
Through offering a cohesive program of educational and interpretive activities, Oakville Galleries makes an important and ongoing contribution to the community of Oakville. Specifically designed for its community, its gallery members and its various audiences, these activities strive to foster the development of visual literacy skills. The range of activities includes gallery tours, art classes, docents and docents training program, video and lecture programs and artists-in-residence program. Where appropriate and possible, exhibitions and projects originated by Oakville Galleries are fully researched and documented through the production of accompanying publications, brochures and animation devices.
Oakville Galleries adheres to the Canadian Museums Association standards and practices in all domains, and is supported by a fully-trained staff and active volunteer base.
