Summer Gallery Attendant

Number of positions: 2, including 1 bilingual
Terms: Contract positions (16 June 2008 to 30 August 2008)
Salary Level: $13.00/hour
Weekly schedule: an average of 36 hours/week, 6 days a week including Saturday and Sunday

General Responsibilities and Functions

Reporting to the Director of Education and Public Programmes or to the Director in her absence, the Summer Gallery Attendant engages the public in discussions about the exhibitions presented at Oakville Galleries and is responsible for the security of the works of art.

The Summer Gallery Attendant:
-is responsible for opening and closing the exhibition spaces according to the hours of operation communicated to the public
-hosts visitors of Oakville Galleries’ exhibitions
-initiates discussions about the exhibitions on view
-motivates the public to learn about contemporary art in its many forms
-leads tours of the exhibitions
-informs the public of Oakville Galleries' programmes

Qualifications

The ideal candidate:
-has completed a degree in History of Art, Art Education, Visual and/or Media Arts
-maintains a solid knowledge of the contemporary visual art practices and museum practices
-has the proven ability to communicate effectively in English, and in English and French for the bilingual position
-is comfortable to interact with the public and to deliver public speeches

Summer Art Camps Instructor


Number of positions: 2, including 1 bilingual 
Terms: Contract positions (23 June to 5 September 2008)
Salary Level: $15.00/hour
Weekly schedule: Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4 pm or from 9:30am to 5:30pm

General Responsibilities and Functions

Reporting to the Youth Programme Coordinator or to the Director of Education and Public Programmes in his absence, the Summer Art Camp Instructor engages children 6 to 15 in hands-on activities indoors and outdoors. He/she contributes to the finalization of the summer camps preparation (programme design, evaluation of supply needs, testing of supplies and equipments) and contributes to the delivery of art activities throughout the summer. He/she is responsible for the safety of children 6 to 15 years old. The bilingual Summer Art Camps Instructor works in both official languages throughout the summer.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:
-completed a degree in fine arts and/or art education with an interest in contemporary visual and media practices
-an interest in working with youth
-a proven ability to communicate effectively in English and, in English and French for the bilingual instructor
-strong organization skills
-an ability to work independently and in a team environment

Animateur (back-up position)

Number of Positions: 2
Terms: Contract positions (starting immediately)
Salary Level: $13.00/hour
Weekly Schedule: 4 to 12 hours per week, including a Sunday shift and other flexible hours.

General Responsibilities and Functions

Reporting to the Director of Education and Public Programmes and to the Director in her absence, the Animateur engages the public in discussions about the exhibitions presented at Oakville Galleries and is responsible for the security of the works of art.

The candidate will:
-maintain an on-going familiarity with the practices of contemporary art, through research and professional interaction
-maintain an ongoing familiarity with art works and artists exhibited at Oakville Galleries
-motivate the public to learn about contemporary art in its many forms
-inform the public of Oakville Galleries' programmes
-monitor and maintain the exhibitions on view at Oakville Galleries
-assist with special events
-attend information sessions on all activities scheduled at Oakville Galleries in collaboration with any relevant staff members
-be available to work weekends and evenings

Qualifications

The ideal candidate:
-has completed a degree in History of Art, Art Education, Visual and/or Media Arts
-maintains a solid knowledge of the contemporary visual art practices and museum practices
-has the proven ability to communicate effectively
-has the ability to work both independently and in a team environment
-has demonstrated proficiency in English; proficiency in French is an asset

Recreation Instructor

Number of positions: 1
Terms: contract position (2 July to 29 August 29)
Salary Level: $12.00/hour
Weekly schedule: 15 hours/week (Monday to Friday, 11 am to 2 pm)

General Responsibilities and Functions

Reporting to the Youth Programme Coordinator or to the Director of Education and Public Programmes in his absence, the Recreation Instructor is responsible for designing and leading outdoor activities for children 6 to 12, and to ensure their supervision and safety.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate has:
-completed a degree in sport and/or recreation
-high energy and a strong sense of leadership
-proven experience in working with children in camp setting
-an ability to communicate effectively in English. French is a strong asset
-strong organization skills
-an ability to work independently and in a team environment
