The Collage of LIFE
Grades 9 to 12

At the Galleries

Collage is a cornerstone of contemporary art practice, but has a history stretching back hundreds of years. By juxtaposing words and images, artists can convey multiple layers of meaning with beautiful and clever compositional strategies. After looking at examples of collage by some of Canada’s best artists, students will use clippings from vintage LIFE magazines to create their own flat and sculptural collage self-portraits, then learn how to transform their artworks into GIFs using digital cameras and computers.
