I live in Oakville but work as a school administrator in Mississauga. During the past 10 years, in each of the schools in which I have worked, over 30 different language groups have been represented within the student populations. Several years ago, I happened to be downtown for the United Way high school Bath Tub Race. While others around me got caught up in cheering their team and laughing at the trials that befell the errant tubs, I remember standing stock-still on the sidewalk and staring. I looked at all of the teenage racers. There was one black student. I hope that this is not what would confront me at a Bath Tub race today. Our children need to experience and benefit from the rich diversity of cultures that populate our real world.
