Junior Summer Camps

Junior camps offer hands-on instruction in key art-making techniques such as drawing, painting and sculpture, then build on these fundamentals with fun-filled projects, such as animations, performances and large-scale installations. No two campers' works look alike, as every activity is adapted to suit participants' individual ideas, interests and abilities. Each week includes interactive tours of the Galleries' art exhibitions and outdoor recreation activities. Campers celebrate their creations with a special Friday afternoon finale for family and friends. Check out what participants got up to in past years in in our photo archive.

  • 3 July – 6 July 2018*
  • 30 July – 3 August 2018

Inspired by our summer exhibition, campers will experiment with an assortment of watercolour, tempera and acrylic paints on specialty papers and canvases, creating a suite of paintings in both abstract and realistic styles. Extra time will be spent exploring unusual painting tools, splatter painting and large-scale mural-making. Activities will focus on developing children's technical skills while boosting their creative confidence.

A Clay-Date with Friends

  • 9 July – 13 July 2018
  • 7 August – 10 August 2018*

Working with clay, campers will create a crew of friendly figures borne straight from their imagination—people, animals, aliens: the sky's the limit! Campers will subsequently paint their figures, make them outfits, build homes for them to live in, and more. Children will also illustrate the story of an imaginary playdate with their new friends in books they will learn to make themselves.

Stop-Motion Madness

  • 23 July – 27 July 2018

Spend the week making your own animated movie. Participants will build characters and props out of modeling clay, fabric and other bits and bobs, then hand-build miniature sets for them. Campers will photograph their characters acting out different scenes, then learn how to edit their photos in iMovie to create a real stop-motion animation. Join us at the end of the week for a special screening complete with popcorn and lemonade!
