Join us for our Big Thinkers speakers series with Canadian fashion icon Jeanne Beker. The former host of Fashion Television will discuss her remarkable career in fashion and in the media, as well as her upcoming projects. Beker's talk is held alongside Tamara Henderson's exhibition at Oakville Galleries, Season's End: Out of Body, which sees Henderson stage an elaborate mise-en-scène of beguiling sewn sculptures, hand-dyed textiles and other found and recycled materials gathered during her extensive travels.

There will be a Q&A session following the talk.

Biography

Jeanne Beker started her career as an actress, but quickly moved into radio and then television as co-host of the ground-breaking program, The NewMusic, as well as the entertainment anchor on CityPulse News. She went on to become the host of Fashion Television (FT), which aired for 27 years with viewers across Canada and in more than 140 countries around the world. FT also led to the launch of the FashionTelevisionChannel, which Beker helped pioneer.

Beker is the former editor-in-chief of the magazines FQ and SIR, and she also co-executive produced the documentary series, Cover Stories. As a writer, she is the author of five books, including her bestselling autobiography, Jeanne Unbottled: Adventures in High Style. Beker's many awards include being inducted into the Canadian Marketing Hall of Legends as a brand builder; being made a member of the Order of Canada in 2014 for her support of the Canadian fashion industry; as well as being bestowed with the “Vantage Women of Originality Award"; the “Variety Club Diamond Award"; the “Crystal Jury Award from Women in Film and Television"; the “2013 Canadian Award of Distinction" from the Banff World Media Festival; and being honoured with a Canadian Screen Achievement Award for the role she played in changing the way Canadians watch television. Jeanne was past Honorary Chair of Toronto's Annual Fashion Cares, and sits on the honorary board for Gilda's Club of Greater Toronto.

Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square

On its final stop in Oakville, Out of Body expands on these previous presentations, bringing together an assortment of objects and materials collected by the artist on her recent travels.
