Since the beginning of time, humans have told stories through works of art. Let prints take you on a narrative adventure! Students will plan and draw out a dramatic scene, then carve their images into a set softoleum blocks. After rolling ink onto their blocks, they will stamp them onto high-quality paper to compose an epic scene—replete with landscape imagery, architectural features and a cast of characters—enriched by the illusion of depth.
This itinerary is flexible and can be modified to best suit your group's needs and schedule. A full-day program includes 3.5 hours of art-making time. Total recommended length of instructor's visit is 5.5 hours.
9:00 am: Instructor scheduled to arrive at your school to set up for the program.
9:30 am: Instructor leads an introductory conversation about Oakville Galleries and conducts an inquiry-based presentation of contemporary art examples.
10:00 am: Begin art-making activities.
10:30 am: Nutrition break.
11:00 am: Continue art-making activities.
12:00 pm: Nutrition break.
12:30 pm: Continue art-making activities.
2:30 pm: Sharing and reflecting on students' art works.
3:00 pm: Instructor scheduled to depart your school.
THE ARTS: VISUAL ARTS
D1. Creating and Presenting: apply the creative process to produce a variety of two- and three-dimensional art works, using elements, principles, and techniques of visual arts to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings.
D2. Reflecting, Responding, and Analysing: apply the critical analysis process to communicate feelings, ideas, and understandings in response to a variety of art works and art experiences.
D3. Exploring Forms and Cultural Contexts: demonstrate an understanding of a variety of art forms, styles, and techniques from the past and present, and their social and/or community contexts.
1. Developing and Organizing Content: generate, gather, and organize ideas and information to write for an intended purpose and audience.
2. Using Knowledge of Form and Style in Writing: draft and revise their writing, using a variety of informational, literary, and graphic forms and stylistic elements appropriate for the purpose and audience.
3. Applying Knowledge of Language Conventions and Presenting Written Work Effectively: use editing, proofreading, and publishing skills and strategies, and knowledge of language conventions, to correct errors, refine expression, and present their work effectively.
Programs are available weekdays throughout the academic year. Oakville Galleries can regularly accommodate bookings for two groups or a total of 60 students at once—three groups of up to 85 students can be booked with advance notice. Early booking is encouraged. There is a minimum registration of 25 students per group (or the equivalent registration fee) to secure a registration for your school.

To request a booking, teachers should include the total expected number of students, grade level(s), school name, school address, program title, and three preferred dates for the program.
Once booked, you will receive a confirmation form for your booking outlining the number of groups and estimated fees, along with a field trip kit and a map of where to find us.
Schools are required to provide one adult supervisor (teacher or parent volunteer) for every 10 children. There are no fees for adults to participate.
